Birthday cake, here we come…
During the first lockdown, my niece Honor made the most amazing cake; an example of baking perfection, entitled "Pouring the Rainbow". She won a medal for being one of Scotland's premier junior bakers - well if she didn't she jolly well deserves one and I blame Ms. Sturgeon, who fiddled the exam results and only awarded her a B.
With Franziska’s Birthday looming I was inspired to recreate that cake, with the assistance of the children. What fun we had, the kitchen was an explosion of self-raising flour and cocoa powder; the house filled with an irresistible aroma. My wife was banned from the kitchen, lest she trip up on the avalanche of stray M&M's (would not want her spending her big day in A&E with a sprained ankle).
Three proud achievements from this initiative...
... a great fun day with the children,
... washing everything up afterwards (without being asked to)
... and my first stop-motion (very ably guided by the Gen-Z family members).
Had there not been a lockdown, Honor would have flown down and done the baking herself. As it is, here was my replica to replace a grey, drizzly Mancunian afternoon with this Willy Wonkaesque cakescape.
AND... we get to eat it afterwards.
So here it is. Enjoy.
“…truly inspired!”
It is one of life’s injustices that you cannot personally visit us and receive a large slice of this cake for yourself.
By the time lockdown is over we will have eaten it all.
